Grow Your Practice: AAO Practice Opportunities & Careers Can Help You Hire an Orthodontist or Purchase a Practice
Practice Opportunities and Careers, which is overseen by the AAO Council on Orthodontic Practice (COOP), is free to members including providers (doctors listing opportunities) and job seekers. Only AAO members may register as seekers and search for opportunities on the service. Non-members – including orthodontists, corporate dental groups and non-orthodontist-owned multispecialty groups – may list opportunities after paying a fee.
If you are interested in acquiring another practice, you may be interested to know that since the beginning of 2016, more than 175 practices for sale have been listed on Practice Opportunities and Careers, including 60-plus current listings. Purchasers have access to all aspects of the service that are available to those seeking employment, and may search for practices for sale.
Providers Enjoy Confidentiality, Easy Candidate Search Capabilities
Registered providers using Practice Opportunities and Careers may:

- Post anonymously to maintain confidentiality if desired. Any provider may use this option. System-based e-mail allows for confidentiality when corresponding with candidates.

Dr. Shyam Desai, who has offices in Bridgeport, Stamford, New Haven, Norwalk and Danbury, Connecticut, used Practice Opportunities and Careers to hire associates during 2014-15. In Dr. Desai’s area, the economy rebounded quickly after the 2008-09 recession and his practice grew fast in subsequent years.
“The Practice Opportunities and Careers site always functions as it should and the e-mail function works well,” he told the AAO for a 2016 Bulletin feature. “The young doctors all know about it, so it has a great pool of candidates and you can get a good group of applicants from which to choose.
“I have talked with friends in other specialties who do not have anything like Practice Opportunities and Careers,” Dr. Desai adds. “I think that we are very fortunate in the orthodontic specialty that the AAO provides this service, especially at a time when many doctors are hiring or preparing to sell their practices.”
